Farmington, NM at a Glance
Located in the San Juan River Valley, Farmington is the largest city in the Four
Corners region of the United States,
where the borders of New Mexico,
Arizona, Utah
and Colorado all meet at a single
spot. The region surrounding Farmington is consistent with the image people have
of the southwestern United States, with desert steppes and rugged mountains covering
the landscape. The area was a meeting point for many American Indian cultures,
including the Navajo, Hopi, Apache and Ute peoples, and much of these influences
still remain. The Aztec
Ruins National Monument near Farmington is a series of pueblo structures dating
back to the 11th century. Outdoor recreation is a prominent activity in the area,
with miles of open desert for hiking, biking and off-roading. Navajo
Lake State Park harbors the second largest lake in New Mexico and is a popular
destination for fishing, camping and boating.
